The Canadian Legal Education Annual Review (CLEAR) is a peer-reviewed annual publication of the Canadian Association of Law Teachers (CALT). The aim of the journal is to foster scholarly exchanges on issues related to legal education and relevant to all Canadian law professors, graduate students and those who teach law. In particular, the journal aims to encourage critical and scholarly reflections on the aspirations, goals, objectives, values and cultures of legal education and on the processes involved in law teaching.

Each issue will be comprised of a number of substantial articles dealing with current issues and problems in legal education, presenting comparative or empirical studies on legal education and action-research projects carried out by professors, examining new trends in adult education or new methods of delivery (including but not limited to learning technologies), and discussing faculty or university reports dealing with issues such as curricular reforms and access to legal education. In addition, the journal will feature other pieces such as personal stories and reviews of books and other media.

Submission Guidelines

In particular, the journal aims to encourage critical and scholarly reflections on the aspirations, goals, objectives, values and cultures of legal education and on the processes involved in law teaching.

The editors of the Canadian Legal Education Annual Review invite article-length manuscripts, comments, book reviews and personal stories of interest that are appropriate to the aims of the journal. CLEAR is a bilingual publication and seeks original contributions in French and English.

Out of respect for our external reviewers, it is expected that manuscripts submitted to CLEAR have not been and will not be submitted elsewhere until a decision has been made by CLEAR editors about publication. The Review cannot pay authors for their contributions. Contributors will receive a free copy of the issue in which their article appears as well as 10-15 offprints of their article.

Editorial Procedure

Manuscripts sent to CLEAR are first read by members of the Editorial Board to assess the quality of the scholarship in the article and its appropriateness to the mission and purposes of CLEAR. Manuscripts that are considered appropriate for publication by the CLEAR editorial board are then submitted anonymously to at least three external reviewers, whose reports will be sent to the author together with the editorial decision (made by at least two members of the editorial board) to publish as is, with minor or major revisions, or not to publish.

Manuscripts can be sent to CLEAR at anytime during the year, but the ultimate deadline for publication is the end of the month of September of the year preceding publication (eg September 2007 for publication of 2008 volume). We will do our best efforts to give authors a timely response about publication and we welcome them to communicate with us at any point after 8-10 weeks with respect to the status of their submission.

Preparation of manuscripts

To facilitate the review and publication processes, manuscripts submitted to CLEAR must conform to the requirements set out below.

• Authors should submit an electronic version (in Microsoft Word) of their manuscript as an e-mail attachment.
• A separate cover page, bearing the title of the manuscript and the author's contact information should be attached to all manuscripts. Identifying information should not appear in the body of the text or in the notes.
• Although there is no official word limit on each piece, we encourage authors to submit articles that are under 10,000 words (35 pages, double-spaced, including notes and appendices). Notes and personal stories should normally not exceed 15 pages and book reviews should normally be under 10 pages.
• Manuscripts must be accompanied by a short abstract (approx. 200 words) in both French and English, as well as a short biography of the author.
• For citation purposes, CLEAR has adopted the Canadian Guide to Uniform Legal Citation, 6th edition, published by Carswell.
• Once the manuscript is accepted, the author should send to CLEAR the final version of the article in electronic format (Word).

Graphs and charts

• If there are graphs and charts as part of the document, they will need to be typeset separately. Indicate where they are to be located in the text, and place them in a separate file.
