CANADIAN ASSOCIATION OF LAW TEACHERS
ANNUAL MEETING
CONGRESS 2000

Edmonton, Alberta ---- May 27 - 31
May 27 P.M.

AN INTERDISCIPLINARY COLLOQUIUM ON LAW, CULTURE, AND SOCIETY
JUSTICE AND REPAIR

(CANADIAN PHILOSOPHICAL ASSOCIATION AND CANADIAN ASSOCIATION OF LAW TEACHERS)

How should societies deal with past injustices and atrocities? What place is there for redress, formal apologies, retribution, or forgiveness in repairing social injustices? These questions loom over numerous political debates-including facets of Aboriginal/non-Aboriginal relations in Canada, and the role of Truth Comrnissions in rebuilding social justice and solidarity. This colloquium brings together legal theorists and philosophers to address these issues of justice and repair.

The theme of the combined section meetings is: "An exploration of the developing contemplation of some form of legal protection exercisable over items and interests of cultural significance of Aboriginal peoples in Canada. To date this trend has focussed on art and artifacts; folklore, stories, ceremonies and mythology; names, descriptions and symbols. All of such items and interests can be related to "property" and intellectual property is currently being considered as a vehicle by which some protection may be given. However, in a wider context the interests may be matters of human rights which will need to be reconciled with a "proprietary focus"
