The Lincoln Alexander School of Law at Ryerson University invites applications for six (6) tenure track positions at the rank of Assistant Professor. The appointment shall be effective July 1, 2022, subject to final budgetary approval.

Located in downtown Toronto, the largest and most culturally diverse city in Canada and on the territory of the Anishinaabeg, Haudenosaunee and the Wendat Peoples, Ryerson University is known for its culture of entrepreneurship and innovation and is recognized as a city builder. Ryerson has undergone extraordinary growth and diversification over the past decade through award-winning architecture and expansion of its campus that welcomes over 45,000 undergraduate and graduate students each year.

In August 2021, the University also announced that it would begin a renaming process to respond to the history and legacy of Egerton Ryerson and build a more inclusive future.

Lincoln Alexander Law is contributing to this growth as it opened its doors for the first time in September 2020, offering a Juris Doctor program including an Integrated Practice Curriculum (IPC) with a strong emphasis on teaching lawyering skills and on excellence in scholarly research. In addition, we are interested in candidates who will contribute to our Law School’s emerging research and teaching strengths primarily in the areas of Corporate and/or Commercial Law, Tax Law, Aboriginal and Indigenous Law and Law and Technology. Candidates with a strong research and teaching record in other areas are also encouraged to apply.

Lincoln Alexander Law aims to build an outstanding reputation for scholarly work and an innovative teaching culture. In the spring of 2019, the Law Society of Ontario approved the (IPC) designation for the law school making Lincoln Alexander Law one of only two such programs in Canada that integrates lawyering skills in each year of the program which allows our graduates to be licenced as lawyers without articling.

The successful candidate will engage in a combination of teaching, research and service duties, maintaining an inclusive, equitable, and collegial work environment across all activities. Responsibilities include: contributing to our Juris Doctor program through teaching, mentoring and supervision of students; participating in curriculum development/expansion as appropriate; establishing and maintaining a strong, community-engaged research agenda, including pursuing innovative, independent research that produces cutting-edge high quality results; and participating in the academic life of the Law School and the University.

Candidates must hold a Juris Doctor or LLB degree as well as either an LL.M. or a Master’s degree in a closely related field. Preference will be given to those with either a doctoral degree in Law, a PhD in a closely related field, or who are all-but-dissertation (ABD) and are very close to completion. For candidates interested in law and technology, preference will be given to candidates with relevant experience and/or education in science and technology.

In addition, the successful candidate must present evidence of:

● a strong emerging scholarly research that is current, innovative and impactful as evidenced by, but not limited to, peer-reviewed publications, working papers, public policy contributions, presentations at academic conferences, community and professional work, grants, research related awards and other writing or creative production that contributes to the visibility and prominence of the discipline;

● experience with or capacity/potential for high-quality teaching and student engagement via a teaching dossier that outlines their teaching philosophy and teaching accomplishments, including experience with course/curriculum review/development, excellent pedagogical practice, sample syllabi and teaching evaluations; ● strong communication skills and a demonstrated ability to supervise students;

● commitment to our values of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion as it pertains to service, teaching, and scholarly research or creative activities, including a demonstrated ability to make learning accessible and inclusive for a diverse student population; and

● an ability and willingness to contribute to the life of the Law School and the University through collegial service.
